First Steps

Getting started with Knowatoa

Once you’ve created your Knowatoa account, you’re just a few quick steps away from seeing how your brand shows up across AI search engines like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.

This article walks you through what to do first to make sure your data is flowing and your insights are meaningful.

Step 1: Connect your site

Start by connecting the primary website you want Knowatoa to monitor. This is essential for tracking how AI models reference your domain and whether crawlers can access your content.

If you're managing multiple brands or domains, you’ll be able to add more later, but focus on your core site to begin with.

Step 2: Add questions

You have two options when it comes to tracking your visibility:

  • Choose questions from keywords – Knowatoa will suggest high-value search questions based on your existing keyword list.
  • Define your own questions – Enter specific search-style questions that your audience might ask (e.g., “best CRM tools for agencies”).

Both methods feed into your Question Rankings, showing how AI search tools are positioning your brand for each query.

Step 3: Explore your dashboards

Once setup is complete, visit these key areas first:

  • AI Search Console – Check that AI bots can access your website and aren’t being blocked by firewalls or redirects.
  • Rankings – See how your brand appears when people ask specific questions in AI tools.
  • Keyword Audit – Understand the bigger picture: what types of queries your brand shows up for, and what stage of the customer funnel those searches represent.

What to expect after setup

Your dashboards won’t be fully populated immediately. Knowatoa builds your visibility data over time by tracking live responses from AI tools and interpreting their search patterns.

In the first few days, you may notice:

  • Basic crawl status from AI bots
  • Early signals in rankings and brand mentions
  • Initial breakdowns by search intent or funnel stage

Data becomes more meaningful the longer you remain connected and the more questions you track.
