How do I know if my AI search visibility is improving?
What it is
Once you've connected your site and started tracking search questions, the next natural question is: how do I know if it's working? This article walks through the core indicators you can monitor inside Knowatoa to measure progress over time.
Check the AI Search Rankings panel to track movement in your brand’s performance across models like ChatGPT or Claude. Funnel charts and keyword question trends also show if you’re gaining traction.
What metrics to watch
To understand whether your visibility in AI search is improving, keep a close eye on these core metrics across your dashboards:
- Intent spread: Are your tracked questions covering a broader range of search intents (learning, commercial, transactional)? A healthy balance—especially increasing in commercial or transactional intent—suggests your visibility is expanding into more valuable territory.
- Funnel movement: In the AI Search Analysis view, you’ll see how your rankings align with different stages of the marketing funnel: awareness, consideration, or decision. Progressing into deeper funnel stages is a good sign of more targeted visibility.
- Ranking changes: Inside the Question Rankings dashboard, you’ll notice position shifts. An increase in “#1” positions or movement from “Not Found” to any visible rank is a direct sign of improvement.
How to track trends over time
Use Knowatoa’s dashboard on a weekly or monthly basis to monitor:
- Net ranking improvements (e.g., questions moving up in position)
- Changes in which questions return your brand as a top result
- Increases in branded and non-branded visibility
- Growth in intent categories or funnel coverage
Since AI search responses evolve frequently, reviewing your data in consistent intervals (weekly or monthly) helps you catch momentum early.
Signs that your visibility is getting stronger
Here are common signals that indicate positive movement:
- More tracked questions showing your brand in ChatGPT or Claude responses
- A shift from purely branded questions to appearing in generic or competitive ones
- Improvement in funnel depth — from awareness into decision-stage rankings
- Fewer “Not Found” labels across tracked questions
If you're not seeing improvements yet, it might simply be too early—or it may signal a need to revisit your tracked questions.
How to act on improvements (or plateaus)
If you’re seeing growth:
- Double down on content aligned with the questions you're winning
- Expand tracking to new keywords or question sets
- Use CSV export (Pro+ plans) to share wins with clients or stakeholders
If visibility has stalled:
- Reevaluate the questions you’re tracking—are they too narrow or too branded?
- Add commercial or decision-intent questions tied to your offers
- Check AI Search Console for crawler access issues that may be limiting visibility
